Dawson's life was devoted to scholarly work as a sociologist and historian, but his principal achievement and contemporary impact are in his profound insights into the relationship of religion and culture. 
 
Dawson insisted that religion is the key to history. In contrast to the academic tendency to reduce the impotance of religion, Dawson emphasizes the need to understand the original formation and the succesive transformation of any human culture.
